No less than 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Local authorities said a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Locals have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, along with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by civil and military police follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
