Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yes, I would be lying if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about seriously considering a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
He has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would expand the party's House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to cut government money from the state and warned revoking the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy stated, after a this week's tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was blocking $40 million from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a last month's comment responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recently conducted survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
