The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
