New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.

The US region famous for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a swift transformation. Fresh analysis shows that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the planet.

Unprecedented Pace of Change

The speed of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, as per the study. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently increased notably in the last half-decade.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which surprised me. Our climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."

The research places the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the researcher added.

Study Approach and Findings

For the study, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of the New England region.

They discovered that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3°C in the same period.

"This represents very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.

  • Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.

  • The severe cold characteristic of the region is being diminished.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A major reason for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by greenhouse gases.

In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the coastline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.

"The excess heat from climate change is being stored in the oceans like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."

Consequences on Culture and Extremes

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in recent years, including enormous floods and extended drought.

The increasing temperatures endangers cherished aspects of regional life:

  • Maple syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
  • Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snow.

"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from much of southern New England."
