The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new term surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government rejects these claims, just as it refutes everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that once promoted harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
