A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
