Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

Widespread Extreme Heat Alerts Across Multiple States

These conditions follow this month's fires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in areas within South Australia and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, bringing blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness recently after strong gusts compromised the urban power grid, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to significant travel disruption at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were grounded. Substantial damage to power systems is expected to create further problems as utility companies work urgently to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Region

At the same time, a region known for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its grayest and most overcast periods on record. A particular form of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by unprecedented autumn rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

And in Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in intense rainfall, strong gales and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While snow is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the heaviest accumulations in 2016 to a protected area, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, strong winds from the north swept across the island chain, with gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The effect of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more seasonal weather returning.
